Every year on December 5, the world celebrates International Volunteer Day (IVD). Established by the United Nations in 1985, this day aims to recognize and value the essential role of volunteers in society. It is also an opportunity to promote volunteerism and encourage everyone to commit themselves to the common good.
Volunteerism is a powerful expression of human solidarity. Whether it's supporting vulnerable populations, promoting education, protecting the environment or participating in humanitarian actions, volunteers work in many areas to build a more just and sustainable world.
According to the United Nations, millions of volunteers around the world dedicate their time, skills and energy to a variety of causes. Their contribution, although sometimes discreet, is essential to address local and global challenges, such as climate change, humanitarian crises or social inequalities. Each year, International Volunteer Day revolves around a specific theme. In 2024, the theme is: "Strengthening local action through volunteering". This theme highlights the importance of local initiatives and their global impact, highlighting the role of volunteers in transforming communities and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ECOWAS, through its Volunteer Programme officially launched on 26 March 2010, gives young people the opportunity to participate fully in the achievement of Vision 2050—aimed at consolidating peace and prosperity for all. Since its inception, over 217 volunteers have been deployed across the region, with their impactful contributions highlighting the commitment and dedication of youth as key agents for the future of West Africa. ECOWAS volunteers play a vital role in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, education, and enhancing the well-being of local communities.
